1. How and when did the tradition of wearing gowns start?
The tradition started in Europe in the 12th century, when the first universities were created. Teachers in the Church wore long gowns and hoods, and students soon began wearing the same clothes.

2. Which two benefits did the gowns have?
The gowns kept people warm in cold university buildings. They also showed that someone belonged to the university or academic community.

3. When and why did the gown become unpopular in the US?
Academic gowns became less popular after the American Civil War (with GB) because many Americans disliked British traditions.

Last December, I travelled to London with my brother. We arrived on a Friday and stayed until New Year's Day. On Saturday, we visited Parliament and then walked north towards the River Thames. In the evening, we watched The Lord of the Rings at our hotel. My brother prefers travelling in summer, but I really enjoyed our Christmas trip.

Running dictation

Work in teams of two.

1. One student is the runner. The other is the writer.

2. The runner goes to the text on the wall and reads a small part.

3. Try to memorise some words.

4. Run back to your partner and dictate what you remember.

5. The writer writes down exactly what the runner says.

6. You may return to the text as many times as necessary.

7. When the teacher shouts “CHANGE!”, switch roles immediately.

8. Continue until you think you have copied the whole text.

9. When you are finished, raise your hand and tell the teacher.

10. The teacher checks your text. If there are mistakes, you must continue and correct them.

11. The first team with a completely correct text wins.
