Root systems

  • Root system = all roots together
  • Fibrous root system = many small roots, all sprouting from stem
  • Taproot system = 1 large primary root with secondary roots
Taproots have the added benefit that they can store food.
A good example is a carrot.

Osmosis
  • Osmosis = process in which water moves through a
selectively permeable membrane from a place with
high concentration to a place with low concentration.
  • Roots use osmosis to absorb water.
  • Roots have many root hairs, these increase surface
       at which osmosis can happen
Permeable = allowing a liquid or gas to pass through
Selectively means, only allowing certain liquids or gasses trough.
High concentration = there is a lot of the substance
Low concentration = there is a low amount of the substance
Absorbed water is directly transported to the stems.
This keeps the concentration of water in the roots low.
Allowing osmosis to keep happening
!
Roots have many tiny root hairs.
These are small extensions of cells that increase the surface of the roots.
They are very sensitive and break easily
