  • Your hair grows, on average 1.25cm (1/2 inch) a month

  • On average you have 100,000 hairs on your head.

  • You lose around 100 hairs a day through brushing, shampooing and general movement.

  • This loss is natural and is caused by the hair growth cycle.

There are 3 stages to the hair growth cycle:

  • Anagen

  • Catagen

  • Telogen

Tell me what you know about the 3 stages of the hair growth cycle

ANAGEN- The active stage

Anagen is the Active phase of the hair growth cycle.

Around 80% of hair is in this stage at any one time

The anagen stage of the hair cycle lasts between 2-7 years

How long your hair will grow is determined by the length of your anagen phase.

CATAGEN- The change stage

Catagen is the Changing phase in the hair growth cycle.

Hair growth starts to slow, then stop.

The follicle starts to shrink and detaches from the dermal papilla.

This phase is generally 2 weeks long.

TELOGEN- The tired stage

Telogen is the Tired or resting phase of the hair growth cycle.

Around 15% of hair is in the telogen phase at any one time.

This phase lasts for 10-12 weeks.

Towards the end of the resting phase, cell division begins in the dermal papilla and the anagen stage starts again. This causes the resting hair to be pushed from the hair follicle and is usually removed when hair is brushed or combed.
