Vertical Circles

Content Learning Outcome

Apply the knowledge of Newton’s Second Law and appreciate the concept of rotational kinematics.

Mini Learning Outcome

  • Recognize that the object feels lighter when descending and heavier when ascending in vertical circular motion.

  • Identify the difference in the tension at the highest and the lowest points of the motion.

  • Apply Newton’s Second Law to show and compute the tension force at the lowest and the highest point of motion.

  • Calculate the minimum velocity of the mass at the top of a vertical circle.

Example

  1. A bucket of water with mass of 0.80 kg is swung about in a vertical circle by a string 0.60m long . The speed of the bucket varies as it travels around the circle.
