Vertebrate is the term we use to describe animals with a backbone.

The 5 groups of vertebrate animals are:

Mammals

Birds

Reptiles

Amphibians

Fish

Skulls

The skull is a particularly important part of the vertebrate skeleton as it helps to protect the brain.

Here are some skulls on display at Ulster Museum. Can you name the animals they belong to?

Invertebrates have no backbone. Some have a soft body, others might have an 'exoskeleton' - a hard shell protecting them. Can you think of any?

Invertebrates

Invertebrates include animals such as:

Crustaceans (crabs, lobsters, shrimp)

Insects (flies, butterflies, bees)

Arachnids (spiders, scorpions)

Molluscs (octopus, squid, snails, slugs)

...and many more!
