Today: Start Unit 9
Goals of unit 9
  • You are familiar with conditionals: zero, first, second & third (grammar)
  • You can form if/when-clauses with these conditionals (grammar)
  • You see the difference between words with similar meanings (vocab)

This lesson
  • Short instruction
  • Short practise
  • Link to a website to practice further

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

What do you remember from last year with regards to the conditionals?

Slide 4 - Woordweb

For all conditionals
  • There are four forms in total
  • Each conditional has 2 parts: the if-clause, the main clause
  • It depends on the chance which conditional you use
  • It depends on the conditional which form you use

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Zero conditional
Use: There is no condition [=voorwaarde], it always happens like this. The chance is 100%

Form: If + present simple, present simple

If metal is heated, it expands.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

First conditional
Use: There is a small condition [=voorwaarde]. The chance is between 50% and 100% --> possible and probable [=waarschijnlijk]
Form
If + present simple, will + whole verb
If I see Danny,          I will tell him to call you.
(real possibility)     (result of this possible situation)

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Second conditional
Use: There is a bigger condition [=voorwaarde]. The chance is less than 50%, but more than 0% --> improbable (for now) [=onwaarschijnlijk], but still possible
Form:
If + past simple,            would + whole verb
If I had the money,        I would buy a new laptop.
(not impossible)             (result of this improbable situation)

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Third conditional
Use: The chance is 0% --> it is impossible

Form:
If + past perfect,                would + have + past part. [=volt. dw]
If I had known ...                 I would have cleaned the house
(impossible, because       (the result of an impossible situation)
I didn't know)

  • New website to practice = Thinglink

  • The numbers underneatch each question mark go to extra practice per conditional
  • The blue numbers at the bottom are exercises with mixed conditionals

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Now
  1. You use Thinglink to practice the conditionals
  2. After Thinglink, do the following exercises in your WB (and check!): WB p.59-62, ex. 1-6

I'll stay in the Google Meet in order to answer questions or explain things further.
You stay in the Google Meet as well, with microphones off
