Active vs Passive
Who does the action?

Subject does the action &  focus on the subject --> active
The lion killed the hunter.

The action is done to the subject & focus on the action--> passive
The hunter was killed by the lion.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Why do we use a passive?
1) The action is more important than who/what does the action
The city was destroyed in 1755.

2) We are unsure who exactly does/did the action
                              Many objects have been stolen.

3) It is obvious or understood who does/did the action
                              The patient was cured.

4) We want to shift focus (object becomes subject)
