Discovering the World of Sound Waves

What do you already know about sound?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to explain what sound waves are, use new sound vocabulary, and describe how sound travels.

What Is Sound?

Sound is a type of energy that travels in waves. We hear sound when these waves reach our ears.

Key Vocabulary

Wave, Vibration, Medium, Frequency, Amplitude. We will learn what these words mean today.

What Makes Sound?

Sound is made by vibrations. When something vibrates, it moves back and forth quickly.

Sound Needs a Medium

Sound travels through a medium like air, water, or solids. It cannot move through a vacuum (empty space).

Frequency and Pitch

Pitch

Frequency is how often the wave vibrates. High frequency means a high sound (high pitch).

Frequency

Pitch is how high or low a sound is. Dogs hear higher pitches than humans.

Amplitude and Loudness

Amplitude is the size of the vibration. Bigger amplitude means a louder sound.

Loudness is how strong or soft a sound is to our ears.

How We Hear

When sound waves reach our ears, they make our ear parts vibrate. Our brain then understands these as sounds.

Can You See Sound Waves?

We cannot see sound waves, but we can sometimes see their effects. For example, rice on a drum moves when the drum is hit.

Quick Recap

Sound is made by vibrations that travel as waves through a medium. Key words: vibration, wave, medium, frequency, amplitude.

Reflection

What is one new word you learned about sound today? Write it down and explain its meaning in your own words.
