I have live in Delft for 10 years.
= in verleden begonnen, maar niet afgelopen: present perfect

Ik heb 5 jaar in Frankrijk gewoond.
I lived in France for five years.
= verleden tijd, nu niet meer: past simple

Wanneer Past Simple?
Iets is op een bepaald moment in het verleden gebeurd.
(last night, yesterday, a month ago, in 2005 etc.)

Hoe maak je Past Simple:
regular verb: -ed (worked, started, phoned, walked etc.)
irregular verb: 2e vorm (ran, drove, gave, went, was/were etc.)

Wanneer Present Perfect?
  • Iets is in het verleden begonnen en duurt nog voort.
(since, for, always, ever, never, often, sometimes)

We have played soccer since 2002. (We voetballen nog steeds.)
She has known him for three years. (Ze kent hem nog steeds.)
I have lived there all my life. (Ik woon er nog steeds.)

  • Om te praten over ervaringen tot nu toe.
(ever, never, already, yet, before, recently, lately, so far)

Have you ever been to New York? (Zo niet: misschien komt dat nog)
I have worked on this essay for two days. (Ik ben nog wel langer bezig)

Wanneer Present Perfect?
  • Iets is in het verleden gebeurd en je noemt het resultaat. Het maakt niet uit/is vaag wanneer iets gebeurd is. 
(in Nederlands ook voltooid deelwoord)

I feel sick, because I've eaten too much chocolate.
They have smashed the window and it still isn't fixed.

You are going to roleplay a job interview in pairs. 
One of you is the parent and the other person is applying for a job as a babysitter.  

Ask 5 “Have you ever ….” questions. Use the present perfect in your first question. 
If the answer is ‘yes’, ask a follow up question. Use the past simple in the follow up question. (When/Where/How did you ....?)
