Slide 8 - Slide

Modal verbs (hulpwerkwoorden)
De belangrijkste hulpwerkwoorden in het Engels zijn:
  • Can (can you pass the salt, please?)
  • Could (could you pass the salt, please?)
  • Should (should we go on holiday?)
  • Have to (I really have to do my homework)
  • Must (I really must do my homework or else my parents will get mad)

Slide 9 - Slide

Modal verbs =
 een catgorie van hulpwerkwoorden
Can/Could:
  • Can en Could betekenen allebei 'kunnen'. Could is wat beleefder en netter.
  • Could is soms ook de verleden tijd van can (when I was younger, I could do that trick)

Must & have to:
  • Must is strenger dan 'have to'
  • Ze betekenen allebei hetzelfde, maar must is dwingender
  • Must gebruik je meestal als het volgens de regels is of volgens de wet
  • Bijvoorbeeld: You must not smoke in here.

Ontkennende zinnen
Je kunt ook zeggen dat iets niet zo is, of moet. Dan zet je de hulpwerkwoorden in de negatieve form.

Bijvoorbeeld:

You must not walk on the premises. - You mustn't walk on the premises.
I can tell you about your plans. - I can't tell you about your plans.
