Moeten kan worden vertaald met should/had better/ought to/need to/have (got) to/must.

"Had better" drukt een vrijblijvend advies of aanbeveling uit. 
  • You had better stop smoking.
  • You had better see your GP about this complaint.

"Should" geeft een wat meer nadrukkelijk advies aan, met een ondertoon van :het is beter, of een instructie.
  • You should really stop smoking, then you wouldn’t cough so much. 
  • You should take this medication twice a day in a glass of water.

"Ought to" kan in de meeste zinnen op dezelfde manier als should gebruikt worden, maar er zit een ondertoon in van: het is fatsoenlijker, het is zoals het hoort te zijn.


  • You ought to be polite to elderly people.

  • This has to be the right place. 
  • You have got to be in the clinic by 8 o’clock sharp.
