  1. use past continuous;
  2. use past continuous  vs. past simple;
  3. know the difference in meaning between modals should, must and have to;
  4. use the modals in a sentence.

Grammar 3A: Past Continuous


Use Past Continuous when something happened in the past AND it took some time to finish.

How to make the Past Simple: was/were + main verb + ing
I was writing a letter.
He was watching a movie.

Grammar 3B: Past Continuous vs. Past Simple
Longer activity = Past Continuous
I was listening to music...

Shorter activity = Past Simple
...when my mum called me to dinner.
PAST SIMPLE
verb + ed, for example: look - looked
UNLESS it is an irregular verb, like: see - saw

Grammar 4: Modal verbs
Modal verbs add meaning to the sentence. 

Should = advice, no obligation (advies, geen verplichting)
         I should practice for my test tomorrow.

Must = obligation from the speaker OR strong advice (verplichting van de spreker OF sterk advies)
         You must call your grandparents soon.

Have to = obligation (verplichting)
         We have to bring our ID's to the event.

Grammar 4: Modal verbs
Modal verbs are followed by the infinitive (hele werkwoord). 

I should practice for my test tomorrow.
You must call your grandparents soon.
We have to bring our ID's to the event.
He has to finish his homework first.
