The Ancient Egyptians
Archaeologists have been learning about the Ancient Egyptians for many years.

The Egyptians were one of the world's first civilizations for building splendid cities and pyramids.

Origins
People began to settle along the River Nile 10,000 years ago. Egypt was made of two kingdoms (upper and lower).

In 2900 BC, the kingdoms were united under King Menes, who named his capital city Memphis.

The River Nile
The river Nile is the longest river in the world (4132 miles) and was vital to the Ancient Egyptians.

When the river flooded, it provided fertile soil for farming. It was also an important transport route through the country.

Mummification
Bodies of rich Egyptians were mummified and sometimes even their animals.

Mummification involved removing organs, soaking a body in salt, wrapping it and then placing in a coffin. 

Egyptians hoped that preserved body would make its way to the next world.
