Past simple

De past simple ( verleden tijd ) gebruik je voor situaties/gebeurtenissen die in het verleden gebeurd zijn en nu zijn afgelopen.


I worked in the supermarket yesterday.

The past simple
De past simple - verleden tijd herken je vaak aan Engelse woorden die een tijd uitdrukken, zoals 
yesterday, in 2010, an hour ago, last Friday, a week ago etc. 

Deze woorden geven aan dat er situaties/gebeurtenissen zijn die zich in het verleden hebben afgespeeld en nu zijn afgelopen.

Hoe vorm je de past simple?

2 manieren.


1. bij regelmatige werkwoorden > werkwoord + ed
work > worked

Spelling
Je voegt dus -ed toe aan het werkwoord.

Eindigt het werkwoord al op een -e
Dan voeg je alleen een -d toe om er verleden tijd van te maken.

create > created

Soms verandert de spelling van een werkwoord als je hier -ed achter zet.


- werkwoord dat eindigt op medeklinker + y > y verandert in ie.
study > studied


- korte werkwoorden van één lettergreep met een korte klinker (a,e,i,o,u) > medeklinker verdubbelt.
stop > stopped / grab > grabbed

Past Simple: Irregular verbs
Past Simple: Irregular Verbs  > Learn by heart (uit je hoofd - stampen, stampen, stampen!)
- verleden tijd
- de actie of gebeurtenis is nu gestopt
- de vorm van het werkwoord verandert.

I went to London two years ago.   (to go) 
We took a flight to Luton Airport.  (to take)
I was brought up in Leeuwarden.   (to bring up)

De tweede manier om een werkwoord in de vt te zetten:

2. een onregelmatig werkwoord in de juiste vorm zetten.

Onregelmatige werkwoorden zijn werkwoorden die veranderen van vorm. De enige manier om dit te kunnen is ze uit je hoofd te leren!


to be - was/were - been

Dit jaar leer je alle onregelmatige werkwoorden.
Voor de verleden tijd gebruiken we de tweede vorm van deze werkwoorden.

Grammar 2A: Past simple - questions
Is het ww een vorm van to be (was/were?) of een hulp ww?
Zet dit ww dan vooraan om een vraagzin te maken.
You were happy yesterday. --> Were you happy yesterday?
You could give me a call. --> Could you give me a call?

Is het ww geen vorm van to be?
Zet dan Did voor de zin en gebruik na did het hele ww t.t.
He ate a sandwich last night. --> Did he eat a sandwich last night?
My mother knew about it. --> Did my mother know about it?

Maak je een WH-vraag?
Dan zet je het WH-woord (who/what/which/when/where/how) aan het begin van de zin.
Where did you leave your keys?
How was your pasta?
When did Daisy leave for school?

Is het ww een vorm van to be (was/were?) of een hulp ww? 
Plak dan not achter het werkwoord.
You were happy yesterday. --> You weren't happy yesterday.
You could give me a call. --> You couldn't give me a call.

Zet dan didn't voor het ww en gebruik het hele ww t.t.
