When do we use a/an?
  • When we talk about something for the first time:
    'Once upon a time there was a princess...'

  • When we talk about someone's job or role:
    'She is an astronaut.' / 'He is a father.'

  • We use 'a' before words that start with a 'consonant' (=medeklinker) sound.
    A cat - a television - a university. 
  • We use 'an' before words that start with a 'vowel' (=klinker) sound.
    An animal - an umbrella - an honour.

When do we use 'the'?
  • When we mention something the second (or a later) time:
    '...The princess lived in a huge castle.'
  • When we talk about a particular group of things or people:
    'The teachers at this school really need a vacation'
  • When we talk about unique objects:
    'The moon', 'the Earth'.

Some nouns (=zelfstandig naamwoorden) don't get an article:
  • Names, cities, (most) countries and continents:
    Elizabeth, London, Turkey, Africa.
  • When talking about uncountable/abstract things:
    Love, motivation, pain.
  • When talking about things or people in general:
    'It's good to eat vegetables / Cats are usually lazy'
    This is called 'zero article'
