Je gebruikt de past continuous dus alleen als je kunt zeggen dat je iets aan het doen WAS.

The principal was sitting in his office

Past Continuous 
De Past Continuous  gebruik je:
  • als iets in de verleden een tijd aan de gang WAS. 
  • op een bepaald moment door een andere handeling werd onderbroken;
Voorbeeld: I was screaming WHEN he hit the brakes.(trapte op de rem)
  •  als twee handelingen tegelijk aan de gang zijn. 
Je maakt deze door was/were + ww+ ing
Voorbeeld: WHILE I was watching TV, I was also preparing my lunch.
