Present simple
Present continuous
When: habits, regular actions, schedules
When: right now, near future
Infinitive (verb) or SHIT-rule = she, he, it --> verb + s
to be (am/is/are) + verb + ing
Signal words: always, never, usually, sometimes, on Saturdays ...
Signal words: (right) now, at the moment, look!, as we speak, currently...

When: things that happened in the past
When: things that were happening (longer actions),  
verb + -ed, or 2nd row irregular verbs
to be (was/were) + verb + ing
Signal words: yesterday, last year.., in 2012.
