Reading at A2 level - Let's Practice!

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to read and comprehend texts at A2 level with greater ease and confidence.

Vocabulary Building

Learn new words and their meanings through exercises and activities.

Provide a list of vocabulary words and have the students practice writing sentences using them.

Skimming

Learn to skim through a text to get the gist of it.

• Read the text quickly

• Try to think of one sentence to summarize each paragraph – what is the MAIN IDEA?

Provide a short text and have the students practice skimming through it and summarizing what they have read.

Scanning

Learn to scan through a text to find specific information.

• Read the text slowly
• Look for what is being asked for in the question like a specific person or date
• Once you find the part in the text you are looking for – read carefully

Provide a longer text and have the students practice scanning through it to find specific details and answer questions.

Comprehension

Practice reading and comprehending texts at A2 level.

Reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. It relies on two, interconnected abilities: word reading (being able to decode the symbols on the page) and language comprehension (being able to understand the meaning of the words and sentences).

Provide a few texts for the students to read and answer comprehension questions. Have them discuss their answers with a partner.

Context Clues

Learn to use context clues to understand unfamiliar words.

Context clues are hints in the writing that help you figure out what a word means. Each example below

has hints within the passage or sentence to help you figure out the meaning of the word. R

Provide a few sentences with unfamiliar words and have the students practice using context clues to determine their meanings.

Reading Aloud

Practice reading aloud to improve pronunciation and fluency.

Have the students take turns reading a short text aloud and provide feedback on their pronunciation and fluency.

Encourage the students to continue practicing reading at A2 level and provide resources for them to do so.
