Rule 1: To form the past continuous, use was/were + verb + -ing

I was eating my diner

They were watching the match

We were talking in class

was + eat + -ing -> was eating

Rule 2: You can use the past continuous and the past simple in the same sentence

When he talked to me I was eating my diner

They were talking about games when Jim laughed
