Indirect speech

direct speech:

Johnny says, 'I am working late tonight'. 

'I will give him a lift to the station tomorrow', Tanya said. 

indirect speech: (it is a couple of days later)

Johnny said (that) he was working that night

Tanya said (that) she would give him a lift to the station the next day/the day after/the following day. 

Direct to Indirect speech

So what happens?

• tense is further back 
• pronouns often  change 
• references to time and place often change

Similar to Dutch

Tenses

Simple present in direct speech John said,  'I know where she is'

Simple past in indirect speech 'John told me (that) he knew where she was'

Present continuous in direct speech: I am waiting for the bus

Pay attention

• you can inverse the 'mother said' - part, but not when you're using a pronoun (not: said he, said I)
• Shall and should are only used with I and we!
• All kinds of references to objects, time, and place may change form. 

He asked: 'Where do you live?'
Put into reported speech

1. He asked where we had lived
2. He asked where we had been living
3. He asked where we lived
4. He asked where we did lived

Tenses

Simple present in direct speech John said,  'I know where she is'

Simple past in indirect speech 'John told me (that) he knew where she was'

She asked John: 'Did you like dogs in 1998?'
Put into reported speech

1. She asked John if he did liked dogs
2. She asked John whether he likes dogs
3. She asked John if he was liking dogs
4. She asked John if he had liked dogs

Simple past in direct speech: He said, 'They left for London last week'.

She said to us, 'Go away!'
Put into indirect speech.

1. His girlfriend told him he really should stop

My mom said, 'I have been painting the ceiling all morning'.
Put into reported speech

1. My mom said she has been painting
2. My mom said she was have been painting
3. My mom said she had been painted
4. My mom said she had been painting

(Present) perfect continuous in direct speech: He said, 'I have been painting a lovely picture'.
