Recognizing the present simple
How can you recogize the "present simple"

You can look at a sentence and see if it's a fact or habit (or routine).  
Look for signal words like: 



  • Every day (alledaags), 
  • Never (nooit), 
  • Always (altijd), 
  • Every Wednesday (elke woensdag) .

  • If there aren't any signal words, look at the verb. If it's the base form of the verb or verb + (e)s, it might be a fact.
How can you tell this is the present simple?


  1. He goes to school every morning.
  2. She understands English.
  3. It mixes the sand and the water.
  4. He tries very hard.
  5. She enjoys playing the piano.
  6. They never wash the dishes.
  7. John is always on his phone.
  8. Do you love movies?

Recognizing the present continuous.
How can you recogize the "present continuous"?

Present contiNUous: gebeurt NU
Always use this form:
1. am, is / are
2. infinitive (base form of the verb)
3. -ing 



Signal words:
  • Now
  • Right now
  • As we speak
  • Currently
  • At the moment
  • Listen!
  • Look!
How can you tell this is the present continuous?


  1. I am writing articles on different topics.
  2. He is reading various kinds of books.
  3. They are playing football now.
  4. She is drinking coffee as we speak..
  5. He is going to the library, at the moment.
  6. We are watching a movie in this Cineplex.
  7. Are you shopping in the H&M right now?.

Possessive pronouns

Possessive pronouns show that something belongs to someone.

There are two ways to tell if something is yours or someone else's. 

In DUTCH: 
Dit is mijn telefoon/ This is my phone.
De telefoon is van mij./ The phone is mine.
