So when do we use a and an?
"A" -  goes before words that begin with consonants (medeklinkers):
a cat
a dog
a purple onion
a buffalo

"An" - goes before words that begin with vowels (klinkers).
an apricot
an egg
an Indian
an ordinary man
an uprising

Exceptions (uitzonderingen)
Use "an" before a silent or unsounded letter like [F-ef] or [H-eetsj]
