Energy and matter

When you add or remove energy to a substance, element, object, it can change the properties of that substance/element/object


When you freeze something, you are loosing energy, the particles slow down and they eventually form into a solid (not all substances do this), for example water when frozen becomes ice


When you are adding energy to something you are causing the particles to move faster causing them to move quickly and therefore changing their state, for example, boiling water causes the water molecules to turn into a gas

Heating and cooling

When we are adding energy to something, usually we are using thermal energy


This thermal energy is what causes the bonds between the particles to break and therefore causes them to vibrate more quickly and moving faster around the room


This is what happens when we are melting or boiling something


This is called a change of state - solid, turning to liquid, liquid to gas


All substances have a specific temperature at which they change state
