THE FUTURE

Er zijn vier werkwoordstijden die we kunnen gebruiken om over de toekomst te praten.

1. Present simple
   
2. Present continuous
   
3. To be going to
   
4. Will / shall
   

We gaan de verschillende vormen behandelen in volgorde van waarschijnlijkheid: van zeker dat het gaat gebeuren tot heel onzeker dat het gaat gebeuren.

PRESENT SIMPLE

We gebruiken de present simple voor dingen die volgens schema gaan gebeuren.

• Our plane lands at 8.55 AM.
  
• The bike tour starts in front of the sports park.
  
• What time is your next class?
  

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

We kunnen de present continuous gebruiken voor dingen die gepland zijn en vrijwel zeker gaan gebeuren. Dit zijn dingen waarvoor we al het nodige voor hebben geregeld of waar de tijd en/of plaats al van vaststaat.

• I am cooking dinner tonight.
  
• James is running a marathon in April.
  
• Tim’s team is playing an important match this Sunday.
  
• We are visiting our parents on Sunday.
  
• Unfortunately, their top scorer isn’t coming.
  
• Are you going there by bike?

TO BE GOING TO

TO BE GOING TO

We gebruiken to be going to + hele werkwoord:

1. Wanneer we al iets van plan (vóórdat we hier een gesprek over aangaan).

• I am going to visit my sister next week.
  
• We’re going to attend a concert later this week.
  
• Are they going to take the bus?
• We are going to drive to Spain this summer.
  

2. Bij een voorspelling die is gebaseerd op een aanwijzing.

• Look at those dark clouds! It is going to rain today.
  
• It’s 8.15. I’m going to be late.

WILL / SHALL

WILL / SHALL

We gebruiken will / shall + het hele werkwoord:

1. Wanneer we tijdens een gesprek iets spontaan besluiten.

• I will help you move the couch.
  
• There’s no more bread – I’ll go and buy some.
  
• I’ll have a sandwich and a cup of tea.

WILL / SHALL

We gebruiken will / shall + het hele werkwoord:

2. Bij een voorspelling die gebaseerd is op een mening, of onzekerheid over de toekomst.

• We will win tomorrow's game.
  
• I don’t think Dad will be angry.
  
• I’ll probably get really nervous before my speech.
  

WILL / SHALL

We gebruiken will / shall + het hele werkwoord:

3. Bij een wens, spontaan aanbod, weigeringen, beloftes, voorstellen of verzoeken.

• I hope she will give me a present.
• I’ll get the door for you.
• If I have to choose then I won’t go to her party.
• We promise we will be on time.
• I will pick you up tomorrow.
• Will you cook dinner for me tonight?
• Will you get me a chair, please?

WILL / SHALL

We gebruiken will / shall + het hele werkwoord:

4. Bij feiten, of bij dingen die zo vaak gebeuren dat je ze eigenlijk altijd wel kunt verwachten (algemene waarheden).

• A well-mannered person will hold the door for an elderly person.
  
• He won’t be on time, he’s always late.

WILL / SHALL

Bij vraagzinnen gebruiken we over het algemeen will. Shall gebruiken we alleen met I en we. Shall wordt gebruikt om te vragen naar een mening, bij voorstellen, of om iets aan te bieden.

• Will you go shopping with me this weekend?
• Shall we go out or stay in?
• Shall we go shopping this weekend?
• Shall I help you with that bag?

IN SUMMARY

Present simple: dingen die volgens schema gaan gebeuren.

Present continuous: dingen die gepland zijn en vrijwel zeker gaan gebeuren.

To be going to:

1. Plannen die al van tevoren zijn gemaakt
   
2. Voorspellingen die zijn gebaseerd op een aanwijzing
