Modal verbs

Can, could, may, should, must, have to, might & may.

modal verb: must
Must / have to wordt gebruikt voor Obligation.

- You mustn't leave litter lying around.

Slide 7 - Slide

modal verb: have to
  • We gebruiken have to wanneer we iets moeten doen, dus wanneer het verplicht of nodig is.
  • We gebruiken don't have to wanneer iets niet nodig/verplicht is.

I have to wear glasses in order to read.
You don't have to go home straight after school.

How to use: can
Can / Could wordt gebruikt voor Ability. Ability betekent 'kunnen' - dus dingen die je kan (can) of zou kunnen (could).

+ I can sit on that chair.
- I can't move my arm, because it's broken.
? Can I invite some friends to stay?
