Negations in the past

Goals

 I can use yes/no questions and negative sentences in the past.

What do you think
the past tense means?

Put in past tense:
I/work/hard

Put in past tense:
they/to be/in the house yesterday.

Yes/no questions in the past

was, were and could

To make a question with was, were or could, you put it at the beginning of the sentence.

Was your friend glad to see you?

Were you ill yesterday?

Could you see anything?

Other verbs:

To make a question in the past simple 

 add did to the beginning of the sentence 

Did I jump far enough?

Did we bring the rackets?

Did he commit a crime?

NOTE!

 Replace do or does with did 

to turn a yes/no question into a question about the past:

Do they work well together? → Did they work well together?

Negations

was, were and could:

You add: not or n't

I was tall enough.

I was not tall enough.

I wasn’t tall enough.

you add did not or didn’t followd by the verb

You asked for it. (past tense of ask)

You did not ask for it. (past tense of do + verb ask)

You didn't ask for it.

Make a negation:
You were here yesterday.

She could believe it.

Make a negation:
I cheated during the test.
