To make a question with was, were or could, you put it at the beginning of the sentence.
Was your friend glad to see you?
Were you ill yesterday?
Could you see anything?

Other verbs:
To make a question in the past simple 
 add did to the beginning of the sentence 

Did I jump far enough?
Did we bring the rackets?
Did he commit a crime?

 Replace do or does with did 
to turn a yes/no question into a question about the past:

Do they work well together? → Did they work well together?
