DM Learning Reflection:
Giving & Receiving Feedback

Slide 1 - Slide

  • Introduce
  • What do we mean by feedback? - it can be formal or informal, positive/ encouraging/ affirming or constructive/ suggesting change
  • let's remind ourselves of our conversation with Rachel Warrington
Why give feedback?
It improves personal or organisational performance
It builds self-understanding and confidence
It strengthens relationship
It is right and important to be honest!
Another reason

Slide 2 - Poll

This is a poll - what do you think is the most important reason why we give feedback? (if you had to choose one!)
What makes feedback effective?

Slide 3 - Mind map

What makes feedback effective? Look at your notes from Rachel's session, think of your own experiences giving or receiving feedback, and write your answers on the screen.
Example 1
"James, when you didn't finish that report by Friday as asked, it meant that I did not have the information I needed in yesterday's meeting. This made it challenging to come to a good decision on this project with the Directors"

Slide 4 - Slide

Let's look at these two examples of feedback - why are they effective?/ what is good about them? why are they ineffective?/ what are the issues with them? Let's change them!

Now, bringing our coaching brains in: how would you continue on from each of these pieces of feedback to enable positive action?
Example 2
"I am really struggling with your attitude, Mel. It is discouraging for others in the team, and you bring the energy down in the room."
