Slide 6 - Slide

Two of the elements in Group I (the alkali metals) of the table are Na and K. When they are added to cold water, there is a strong reaction in both cases. If a few drops of thymolphthalein solution are added to water, then it turns blue as the metal reacts.
FOCUS

Slide 7 - Slide

Explain why Na and K are part of the group called alkali metals.

Slide 8 - Open question

The electron configurations of:
sodium (Na) : ___________
A
2, 8, 1
B
2, 8, 2
C
2, 8
D
2, 8, 3

Slide 9 - Quiz

The electron configurations of:
potassium (K) : ___________
A
2, 8, 1
B
2, 8, 8, 1
C
2, 8, 8
D
2, 8, 8, 2

Slide 10 - Quiz

What is the "feature" of the electronic configurations of sodium and potassium that places them in Group I of the Periodic Table?
A
valence electron
B
outer shell
C
density
D
atomic radius

Slide 11 - Quiz

When sodium is added to water it melts and skids over the surface with fizzing caused by the hydrogen gas given off. Potassium reacts with a burst of energy which causes the hydrogen to burn with a purple flame.
FOCUS

Slide 12 - Slide

Which of these metals is more reactive when added to cold water?
A
Na
B
K

Slide 13 - Quiz

Give the WORD equation for the reaction between potassium with water.

Slide 14 - Open question

Complete the balanced symbol equation for the reaction between K and H2O:

_____ K(s)  + _____ (l)           2KOH(aq) + ____(g)
