An outlier in a data set can arise in many ways. 
  • Sometimes, an outlier is due to a human error: measuring errors, writing the wrong answer down, etc.
  • But sometimes an outlier is a legitimate point! 

When researching statistics: If you think an outlier is because of an error, remove it from the data set. Otherwise, keep it.
