Present simple vs present continuous
Present simple:
When something is happens regularly in the present. Also used for facts:
- I write my diary every day.
- My dad runs the fastest in my family. 
Present continuous:
When something is happening right now.
- Listen! Those men are singing very loudly. 
- My dad is writing a letter.

Past simple vs past continuous
Past simple:
When something happened (and finished) in the past :
- We slept at a farm last week.
- Jackie called James to break up with him.
Past continuous:
When something happened in the past and lasted a longer period. Usually combined with the past simple:
- My dad was writing a letter when he ran out of ink..

Pitfalls
Pitfalls are words that are often used wrongly. Sometimes this is because two words have a different meaning even though they sound the same.
Your friends seem really nice.  versus  You're (you are) so funny!
That's my new bike, do you like its colour? versus It's (it is) such a lovely day.
Whose water bottle is this? versus Who's  (who is) that girl over there?
Their main passion is dancing versus They're (they are) new here. versus There is not much to do here.
