After today's lesson you'll be able to use and form the past simple tense (de verleden tijd).

Take a look at this little poem.

So when to use the past simple?

when something happened in the past and it's finished.

key words: last week, yesterday, in 1978, last year etc.

Past Simple

two kinds of verbs:

regular verbs:

past form ends with 

-ed.

walk - walked

work - worked

irregular verbs:

Change in vowel in past form.

give - gave

drink - drank

But for now we'll focus on the regular verbs!

Affermative:

spelling: when a word already ends with an e: 

Dance -> Danced

note how there is no shit-rule!

Negative:

simply add 'did not' and remember that the initial verb is once again the base verb!

Interrogative:

'did' moves to the front. And the initial verb in base form!

translate into English:

When a verb ends with -y, 

the -y changes into -ie. 

I bury -> I buried

When a verb ends with a vowel +-y, we just add -ed.

We enjoy -> We enjoyed

Yesterday we ........... (to empty) the garbage.

just add -ed

verb ending with -e  -> just add -d

verb ending with -y -> -ied
