What do you always have to do?

  • Always take a notebook with you to class. 
  • Write down the grammar rules in your notebook.
  • Write other important stuff in your notebook.

No notebook (or an empty one) means that you've forgotten your work.


Create a vocabulary list at the end of your notebook. This broadens your vocabulary and help you remember more.

Negations 
Negations (negative sentence) always have "not" in a sentence.
This means: 
Verb to be: am not, is not, are not, was not or were not. (isn't, aren't, wasn't, weren't)
Verb to have: have not, has not, had got OR have not got, has not got, had not got. (haven't, hasn't, hadn't, haven't got hasn't got, hadn't got) 
All other verbs + to do (do not, does not, did not OR doesn't, don't, didn't) 

Auxiliary verbs (hulpwerkwoorden):
May not - remains the same!
Should not - shouldn't
Will not - won't
Must not - mustn't

What happens to the verb?
An affirmative sentence (positieve zin) - 

"She likes to work."
It has no verb to be, to have or an auxiliary verb. This means you add the verb to do.
Because we're talking about a female (she). You add -es to do. 
She doesn't ...........
Because you've already used the (e)s in does. You don't have to use it in the main verb like.
She doesn't like to work.

NOT - She doesn't likes to work.

If a sentence is in the past tense: She liked to work.
Do becomes did (past tense) - liked will be the base form (like)
She didn't like to work.

What happens to the verb? (To be)
An affirmative sentence (positieve zin) - 

"He is a great football player."
It has the verb to be in it. This means you do something with the verb is.

Because we're talking about a male (he). You use is and add not.
He isn't or He is not ...........

The rest remains the same.
He isn't a great football player.

What happens to the verb? (To have)
An affirmative sentence (positieve zin) - 

"They have bought a new house"
It has the verb to have in it. This means you do something with the verb have.

Because we're talking about plural (meervoud) (they). You use have and add not.
They have not ......they haven't............

The rest remains the same.
They haven't bought a new house.

What happens to the verb? (auxiliary verb)
An affirmative sentence (positieve zin) - 

"Irma may use her phone during class. 
It has the auxiliary verb may in it. This means you do something with the verb may.

Because we're talking about a female (she). You use may and add not.
Irma may not ...... (NOT mayn't) 

The rest remains the same.
Irma may not use her phone during class.
