1. Wanneer iets is gebeurd in het verleden en het nu nog steeds bezig is / het effect ervan nu nog merkbaar is
2. Als iets in het verleden is gebeurd, maar het exacte moment niet bekend/niet belangrijk/niet bestaand is

PAST SIMPLE: Wanneer?
  • De Past Simple gebruik je wanneer iets in het verleden is gebeurd en nu AFGELOPEN is
  • En wanneer er een verwijzing naar het verleden in de zin staat (bv: yesterday, last week, two days ago, in 2015)

Past simple: I saw that new film last week
Present perfect: I have seen all his films

  • Regelmatige werkwoorden: + -ed
He walked into a store yesterday
He dropped his phone last week / He loved his mother
  • Onregelmatige werkwoorden: tweede rijtje achterin je boek (p. 270/288)
He ate two cookies last Sunday
Present perfect: He has eaten two cookies so far

- Om te zeggen dat iets in het verleden een tijd aan de gang was en hier de nadruk op te leggen

Was/were + hele werkwoord + -ing

PAST CONTINUOUS: Spelling?
1. Als het werkwoord eindigt op -e, laat je de -e weg:
to leave > leaving
2. Als het werkwoord eindigt op een medeklinker met klinker ervoor, verdubbel je de medeklinker:
to run > running
Let op: Dit geldt niet bij -w en -x (snowing, fixing)

3. Als het werkwoord eindigt op -ie, verandert dat in -y:
to lie > lying
