Learning Goals
1. You are able to gather information form an informative text.
2. You are able to translate the information to a reaction scheme.
3. You are able to convert a reaction scheme into a correct chemical equation (microlevel).
4. You are able to sketch a "infographic" which shows the chemical equation (macronlevel).
5. You are able to explain the components of the "nitrogenproblem".

Scientist speak
In the following clip Jan Willem Erisman explains why there is a nitrogenproblem in the Netherlands.

Jan Willem Erisman is professor on the subject of Environment and Sustainability  at the University Leiden at the Center for Environmental sciences.

We will watch the start and revisit the rest at the end of lesson 2.

What is meant by "nitrogen" when discussing the "nitrogenproblem"?

  • The air surrounding you contains 80%  N2 molecules.
  • This is "non-reactive" nitrogen. This is not a problematic substance
  • Which substances are discussed when talkon about the "nitrogenproblem"?

Slide 8 - Slide

The nitrogenproblem
  • The following substances are part of the problem:
      --> NOx
      --> NH3
      --> fertilizer
  • Today you will research the problem of one of these substances
  • Next class you will be the expert on you subject and share you insights with experts on the other subjects

Task for the expertgroups - fase 1
Studie the given texsts. Each texts describes several prosesses.
a. Write doen the reaction scheme for each process.
b. Convert each scheme into a balanced chemical equation.
c. Design a infographic which describes the given proces.

Slide 12 - Slide

  • Deel per expertgroep meerdere kopieën van één tekst uit;

Discussion
  • Next class you will share you information with others
  • Check your answers carefully
  • Bring your notes next class!

Toelichting bij uitgedeelde kringloop:
  • groene pijlen en groene vakken geven de natuurlijke processen weer;
  • Noteer de reactievergelijkingen in de juiste blokken;
  • Teken de infographic naast het blok.
