Past simple
Also use the past simple when:
- one action follows another
I put on my coat and I left the house. Then, it started to rain.
- after when to refer to a shorter action or event that happened in the middle of a longer one, or interrupted it.
I was putting on my coat (longer) when it started to rain (short)

Past continuous
When to use:
- to describe activities from the past from a particular moment. It doesn't matter when it started or finished.
Mum was cooking, my brother was dancing and I was writing.
- after the word while to refer to a longer action that happened at the same time as another action
While Sandra was painting the house, Paula was painting a bowl
