Gebruik
1) om te zeggen dat iets in het verleden is begonnen en nu nog aan de gang. 
ex: Lee has lived in New York since the summer of 2006. 
2) te praten over ervaringen (in iemands leven) tot nu toe.
ex: I've never been on  a sailboat in my life. 
3) om te zeggen dat iets in het verleden is gebeurd en dat je daar nu het resultaat van merkt.
ex: Karim feels neaseous. He's eaten too many fries.

Gebruik
1) alléén voor dingen die een poosje hebben geduurd, meerdere keren zijn voorgekomen of een gewoonte zijn. 
2) als je iets (te) lang vindt duren. 
ex: I've been waiting for ages now!
3) als je aan wilt geven dat iets in het heden het gevolg is van iets wat in het verleden een tijd heeft geduurd. 
We've been playing tennis so we're a bit thirsty.
