[...] there is an important difference between 'would' and 'used to'. 'Used to' can be used to talk about past states as well as past repeated actions and habits, but 'would' is only used to talk about past habits. 'Would' is not used to talk about past states.

Both are used for: Past habits that do not happen now
-we used to stay at the campsite every year
NOT -we used to stay at the campsite last July (that's only once)
Would: to emphasize that the action is typical of a person or situation
- when we were little, it would always rain/dad would always dress up for my birthday

For example: When I was young I used to steal cookies from the tin my dad bought. I always made sure never to take so many of one kind that he noticed them missing. One time, though, I forgot to put the tin back in the cupboard....
