The Past Perfect: 
Use the past perfect when referring to two actions in the past 
whereby the earliest one is the past perfect and the latest one the past simple.
Ex.: When I arrived at the cinema, the movie had already started.
When I rang the door bell the dinner had already started without me!

  • Is used to express something that started in the past
  • and continued until another time in the past
  • you stress that the action took a long time
I had been waiting for hours, when the bus finally arrived.
