it is important to know that 

it is easier to understand 

the English you read or hear

than to speak or write in English yourself.

That is completely normal! Do not worry!

In most countries English is a compulsary subject in  secondary  schools. 

So, for how many years have you had English classes at school?

For how many years ...?

What is your  best  skill?

LISTENING:    I understand the English I hear.

READING:       I understand the English I read. 

CONVERSATION:    I can have a conversation in English. 

SPEAKING:     I can give a presentation in English. 

WRITING:        I can write a text in English.

Example

There is a foreign student in our schoolbuilding.

The student asks you:

What is the easiest way to get to the city centre?

That was not an easy question to answer. Because, it depends on how difficult the task is, it depends on the level of difficulty. 

student A's answer

With the bus. 

(This answer is not very helpful. And also it is not correct English, as you may have noticed. )

student B's answer

The easiest way is to go there by bus. If you walk out of this building you will see a bus stop on this side of the road, a little bit to your right. There you should take line ... which will take you to the Grote Markt. That's the city centre.

It is easy to see that student B shows a higher level of English than student A. 

How would you grade answer A and B on a scale of 1 - 10?

Let's get back to the 1st question.

to find out what you 

are thinking yourself. 

I asked Google this question and I had 2.000.000.000 hits/answers. So which one should I choose? The one at the top? The shortest, the easiest? Only one video?

Compare  your own answers to what the students in the next videos are saying. 

Listen to what these students from Italy are saying. 

Do not worry if you do not understand everything. 

Try to get the main points.

That goes for all the videos.

Listen to what students from different countries are saying.

Did the students say everything that was on your list?

Did they say something that was not on your list?

Do you have something on your list the students did not say?

Did you make a list in Dutch or in English?

Now, back to our 2nd question.

Now, that is a very difficult question. 

Make a list for yourself.
