What is the past simple?

Past Simple

You use the past simple when something happened in the past and is finished

Past Simple - Regular Verbs

After a regular verb you put '-ed'

I/you/we/they walked

She/He/It walked

Other Spelling Rules

We add -ed to verbs ending in vowel + -y

• play - I played
  werkwoord eindigt op -e, dan komt er in de past simple alleen een -d achter:
• live - I lived

werkwoord eindigt op een medeklinker + -y, dan verandert de -y in -ied:

• carry - I carried

de laatste medeklinker verdubbeld als er één klinker voor staat:

• drop - I dropped

Past Simple - Signal words: (WALDY)

In Dutch signal words are called 'signaal woorden'  

These words help you to see if something happened in the past

• W:  when
• A:   ago
• L:   last
• D:  days and dates
• Y:   years

• W: when                        When I was 24, I lived in Canada.
• A: Ago                             I went to Greece two years ago.
• L: last                              Last week I ate pizza for dinner.
• D: days and dates     I called the dentist on Monday.
• Y: years                           In 2016 I worked in London. 

went and ate: are these regular verbs?

- No. Because they don't have an -ed, -ied ending.

Past Simple - Questions/negative

Questions:     Did + base verb

Did you walk to school yesterday?

Negative:      didn't + base verb

You didn't walk to school yesterday.

Past simple 

I __________ my homework yesterday evening. (finish)

They __________ to music all afternoon. (listen)

We __________ a big cake for the party. (bake)

He __________ the email to his teacher. (reply)

Sarah __________ her room last weekend. (clean)

Past simple negative

He __________ the answer to the question. (not remember)

They __________ the movie until the end. (not watch)

I __________ the window before I left. (not close)

She __________ the message on time. (not send)

Past simple questions
