What is Microscopy?

Microscopy is the science of using microscopes to observe objects too small to be seen by the unaided eye. It opened up a new world in biology!

Types of Microscopes

There are different types like light microscopes and electron microscopes. Which type do you think is used most in schools? Why?

Why Do We Use Microscopes?

Microscopes help us study cells and tiny living things. They are essential in medicine, research, and even in forensic science.

Parts of a Light Microscope

Can you name these main parts? Eyepiece, objective lenses, stage, coarse and fine focus, mirror or lamp. Which part helps you adjust focus?

How to Use a Microscope

Always start on the lowest power. Place your slide, focus carefully, and increase magnification. Why shouldn't you use the highest power first?

Making a Microscope Slide

Method:

Materials Needed:

Glass slide, cover slip, specimen (e.g. onion), dropper, stain.

Place the specimen on the slide, add a drop of stain, gently lay the cover slip at an angle. Why is staining important?

Viewing Onion Cells

Investigate: Cheek Cells
