EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · MAIN IDEA
Zo pak je een examenvraag aan

Vraag: What is the main idea of the text?

Text 1: The comfort of looking back
(1) Nostalgia has a poor reputation. In everyday speech it suggests sentimentality, a refusal to face the present, the kind of thing that makes grown men insist that the music of their youth was better than anything produced since. Physicians once treated it as an illness, a form of homesickness to be cured.
(2) Psychologists today take a kinder view. Studies of people recalling cherished moments suggest that nostalgia, far from making us gloomy, tends to lift the mood and to make us feel more connected to others. The warmth of a remembered family meal, it seems, can be borrowed to get through a difficult week.
(3) This borrowed warmth matters most at times of change. A student who has just moved to another city, a worker facing redundancy, a widow learning to cook for one: each of them finds in memory not an escape from the present but a store of evidence that life has been, and can be, worth living.

Text 1: The comfort of looking back (vervolg)
(4) Nevertheless, the critics have a point. Nostalgia is a notoriously unreliable editor. It keeps the sunshine and cuts the queues, the toothache and the arguments, and the past that remains is a flattering fiction. Politicians know this well, and few resist the temptation to promise a return to a golden age that never quite existed.
(5) The question, then, is not whether to feel nostalgic but how. The harmful kind insists that the past must be restored; the useful kind simply draws strength from it. The first treats memory as a blueprint, the second as a resource.
(6) Seen this way, the old accusation of escapism looks unfair. People who look back fondly are frequently more, not less, willing to look ahead, because they have been reminded of what they are capable of.

Text 1: The comfort of looking back (slot)
(7) Nothing here is an argument for living in the past. A person who spends every evening with old photographs is probably avoiding something. But a person who never allows themselves a backward glance is also missing something: a source of courage that costs nothing and is always to hand.
(8) Nostalgia, in short, deserves rehabilitation, if not unconditional praise. Used with a little self-knowledge, it is less a longing for what is lost than a quiet vote of confidence in what is still to come.

What is the main idea of Text 1?
Nostalgia is an illness that politicians exploit
People who feel nostalgic cannot look ahead
The past was happier than the present for most people
Used wisely, nostalgia can give strength for the future

Vraag: What is the main point of paragraph 3?

Text 2: Labels on the wall
(1) Walk through any museum and watch where people look. Rarely at the small white cards next to the paintings, it turns out; most visitors glance at them for a few seconds, if at all.
(2) Curators have started to take the hint. The old label, with its dates, dimensions and technical vocabulary, assumed a reader who already knew why the work mattered. The newer version tends to ask a question, tell a short story or admit that experts disagree.
(3) Some colleagues object that this is condescending, as if visitors were incapable of looking for themselves. But the experiment is not about telling people what to think; it is about offering a way in for those who would otherwise walk past in silence.
(4) A label, after all, is not a verdict but an invitation. The best ones leave the final word to the person standing in front of the picture.
Eigen tekst voor Examenstof
Leestekst voor vraagtype 2. Kernzin alinea 4: A label, after all, is not a verdict but an invitation.
What is the main point of paragraph 3 of Text 2?
Colleagues think visitors should look more carefully
New labels invite visitors rather than instruct them
Visitors are no longer interested in paintings
Experts disagree about the meaning of every work
Goed antwoord: A label, after all, is not a verdict but an invitation. De tweede zin is uitwerking. Fout: de tweede zin citeren.

Vraagtype 3: samenvatting
Vraag: Which sentence is the best summary of the text?

Text 3: The paradox of plenty
(1) Streaming services like to boast about the size of their catalogues, as though an endless menu were an unmixed blessing. Anyone who has spent forty minutes scrolling through titles before giving up and rewatching an old favourite knows otherwise.
(2) A friend of mine, whom I shall call Ruth, describes the experience as "standing in a library where all the books are the same colour". She once spent an entire evening comparing trailers and went to bed without having watched anything at all.
(3) Researchers who study decision-making suggest that, faced with too many options, people may choose less easily, enjoy their choice less and feel more doubt afterwards. Abundance, it seems, can shrink satisfaction.
(4) The remedy, then, is not a bigger catalogue but a smaller one: a handful of trusted recommendations is worth more than a thousand unsorted titles.
Which sentence is the best summary of Text 3?
Too much choice can make people less satisfied
Ruth never manages to watch anything in the evening
Streaming services should stop making new programmes
Old favourites are better than new programmes
