EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · MAIN IDEA

Text D: The charm of ruins

(1) Every few years a town council announces that a derelict building must go, and every few years a handful of citizens chain themselves, figuratively at least, to its doorway. The council sees an eyesore; the protesters see a memory with a roof on it.

(2) It is tempting to side with the councillors. Old buildings are expensive to heat, awkward to adapt and rarely beautiful in the way that postcards promise. A warehouse is, after all, just a warehouse.

(3) But a town that replaces everything old with something new gradually loses its means of explaining itself. Buildings are the only archive that every resident consults daily without noticing; they tell newcomers who lived here, what they made and what they believed was worth the trouble of building.

(4) That is not an argument for preserving every crumbling wall. It is an argument for asking what would be lost before deciding what to gain.

What is the main idea of Text D?

A

Old buildings deserve thought before demolition

B

Councils should protect every old building in town

C

Protesters are wrong to defend derelict buildings

D

Warehouses are the most important historic buildings

Alinea 4 vat samen.

What is the main point of paragraph 2 of Text D?

A

Warehouses are the least useful kind of building

B

Councillors know more about buildings than citizens

C

Old buildings are cheaper to heat than new ones

D

There are fair practical reasons to want demolition

EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · MAIN IDEA

Text E: Letters to the editor

(1) Sir, I read with admiration your front-page celebration of the cashless society. It is a comfort to know that the future has arrived, even if it has not yet reached the ticket machine at my local station, which this morning accepted neither my coins nor my card.

(2) I am told that cash is dirty, slow and old-fashioned. I am less often told what is to become of those who have no smartphone, no bank account or, quite simply, no wish to be tracked through every purchase. Presumably they will be welcomed into the future by a polite notice.

(3) Progress is a fine thing. But a society that cannot sell a loaf of bread without a battery has not been liberated from anything; it has merely exchanged one dependence for another. Yours, T. Mercer

What is the writer's main point in Text E?

A

Ticket machines at stations should be repaired first

B

Going fully cashless creates problems that are ignored

C

Cash is dirtier and slower than the newspaper claims

D

Smartphones are too expensive for most people

What is the main point of paragraph 2 of Text E?

A

Cashless supporters ignore people who cannot join in

B

Cash is dirty, slow and old-fashioned

C

Nobody wants to be tracked through purchases

D

Polite notices are the best way to help people

Goed antwoord: But a society that cannot sell a loaf of bread without a battery has not been liberated from anything; it has merely exchanged one dependence for another. Eerste en laatste woorden zijn voldoende. Fout: Progress is a fine thing (ironisch).

What is the main point of this paragraph?

Few things look as permanent as a tradition, and few are as recent. The 'ancient' ceremony was designed barely a lifetime ago, yet nobody now remembers a time without it.

A

Ceremonies were designed to look modern

B

Traditions are usually invented by one person

C

Traditions often seem older than they are

D

Old ceremonies are no longer performed today
