V5/6: Reading lesson

Slide 1 - Slide

Text 2 (VWO 2021):
Let's practise with an open question, but first a check question...

Slide 2 - Slide

Slide 3 - Mind map

Text: the NHS
Have a look at your printed version of text 2, and read it.
timer
0:45

Slide 4 - Slide

What exactly is the NHS?
"It refers to the Government-funded medical and health care services that everyone living in the UK can use without being asked to pay the full cost of the service."
(Source: https://fullfact.org/health/what-is-the-nhs/)

So basically it's the health care system in the UK.

Slide 5 - Slide

Question 2
Now think about question 2, and answer it in Dutch
timer
1:00

Slide 6 - Slide

Type in your answer to question 2:

Slide 7 - Open question

Correctievoorschrift (q. 2):

Slide 9 - Mind map

Text 7: Rebooting the real
First have a look at the text as a whole, before we go to the questions. What kind of text are we dealing with here, and what do you think is the subject?

Also think about how you approach reading texts in general. Do you first read the text, or look at the first question?

Slide 10 - Slide

Text 7: Rebooting the real
First have a look at the text as a whole, before we go to the questions. What kind of text are we dealing with here, and what do you think is the subject?

Also think about how you approach reading texts in general. Do you first read the text, or look at the first question?
Now read question 26, without looking at the multiple choice options.

Read paragraph 2 (and perhaps also 1), and decide for yourself what you expect should be in the gap for question 26.
timer
2:00

Slide 11 - Slide

Slide 12 - Mind map

Your answer to question 26:
A
although all governments have this tendency
B
and now these are taking over the internet
C
but basically anyone can do it now
D
which people seem to prefer to the real world

Slide 13 - Quiz

Eerst staat er: "It used to take a totalitarian state to create an alternative reality, _____________."
Erna komt: "According to one estimate, a third of online reviews are fake."

Slide 14 - Slide

Now (re-)read paragraph 2 and 3.

Then decide for yourself what the main point is in each paragraph. Write it down in a few words.
timer
1:15

Slide 15 - Slide

Main points par. 2-3:
2: A lot of info on the internet is fake
3: difficult to decide which information is true and which is not

Is this roughly the same as what you had?

Now read the options for question 27, and look up words if you need to.
timer
1:20

Slide 16 - Slide

Your answer to question 27:
A
digital deception is sparked by the gullibility of ...
B
false information is hampering the access...
C
people's reliance on the internet for ...
D
There is a thin line between giving an opinion

Slide 17 - Quiz

Explanation 27B:
false information = misinformation
access people have to proper knowledge is hampered = it becomes harder to sift fact from fiction / valid, authority

Slide 18 - Slide

Now read question 28, and decide what your answer will be.
timer
1:20

Slide 19 - Slide

Your answer to question 28:
A
Nee
B
In practice (alinea 3)
C
It used (alinea 2)
D
As it (alinea 3)

Slide 20 - Quiz

Toelichting bij vraag 28:
"In practice, the democratic ideal of Wikipedia, in which we are all editors, is anarchy." (alinea 3)

Synonyms:
all contributions are valid = democratic, we are all editors
who is an authority? = anarchy (if we don't know who has the expert knowledge, it becomes a mess)

Slide 21 - Slide

Now read paragraphs 4 and 5, and decide for yourself what the main points are in each paragraph.

Write them down for yourself in a few words.
timer
2:00

Slide 22 - Slide

My main points:

Par. 4:
In real life, we also don't know what our 'true self' is

Par. 5:
online communication can change people's image of themselves and who they really are.

timer
0:45

Slide 24 - Slide

Your answer to question 29:
A
fashioning an online personality may affect..
B
it has become near impossible to find ...
C
the anonymous nature of the internet ...
D
the rise of the internet has destroyed ...

Slide 25 - Quiz

Toelichting bij 29A:
Again, the synonyms...:

affect = change
one's actual personality = how we see ourselves / who we actually are

Slide 26 - Slide

Now read question 30, and first decide for yourself what you expect should fit in the gap. Without looking at the options!

Write it down in a few words.
timer
1:00

Slide 27 - Slide

My guess for the gap in q. 29:

it's difficult (to say)

Now look at the options and take your pick / look up any words you need to know the meaning of.

Slide 28 - Slide

Your answer to question 30:
A
we lack the perspective
B
we need the audacity
C
we miss the necessity
D
we require the authority

Slide 29 - Quiz

Toelichting bij vraag 30A:

Door het stukje "both books suffer from being five years too late and five years too early" kom je als het goed is uit bij antwoord A omdat we nog midden in deze ontwikkelingen zitten die razendsnel gaan ("the wheels of change keep on turning").
