You forgot which book you were reading or you want to switch? Wait until everyone else has got their books from my bookshelves before getting a new one.

Relative pronouns

The relative pronouns die jullie moeten weten zijn:

Who, which, that, whose en whom. 

Who

Je gebruikt who om te verwijzen naar personen. 

This is the boy who always eats a stinky lunch. 

My mum, who has been a teacher for years, has retired. 

Which

Je gebruikt which om te verwijzen naar dieren en dingen. 

This is the cat which I got for my birthday.

The house, which has been my dreamhouse for years, is on sale.

Who en which vervangen voor that

Je kunt who en which vervangen door that als het deel van de zin dat begint met who of which (de bijzin) weggelaten kan worden zonder dat de overgebleven zin onduidelijk wordt of de betekenis verandert.

Heel moeilijk allemaal

Simpelere regel: 

Je kunt who of which vervangen door that als er geen komma in de zin staat.

This is the cat which I got for my birthday - This is the cat that I got for my birthday.

Who, which, that helemaal weglaten

Je kan who, which, that helemaal weglaten als een ander woord het onderwerp van de bijzin is. 

Ze kunnen ook weggelaten worden als je de bijzin nodig hebt omdat de rest van de zin anders onduidelijk wordt of de betekenis verandert. (Er staat dan geen komma in de zin) 

This is the cat which/that/- I got for my birthday (I = onderwerp)

This is the girl who/that helped me with my homework (the girl = onderwerp, dus who/that kan niet weggelaten worden)

Whom

Met who verwijs je dus naar personen, maar na een voorzetsel gebruik je dan whom. 

The man to whom you were talking to is my husband. 

Het voorzetsel hoeft er niet perse voor te staan. Het kan ook verder op in de zin staan. In dat geval kan dan ook who (en that of helemaal niets, maar wel volgens die regels)

The man who/whom/that you were talking to is my husband. 

Whose

Je gebruikt whose om terug te verwijzen naar personen, dieren en dingen. Dit is om bezit aan te tonen. 

That is the woman whose wallet got stolen.
