😒🙁😐🙂😃

Slide 4 - Poll

Changing lives, communities and our natural world
At GET OUT we believe ALL young people should have the same access to the natural world, and we are confident those with a traditionally limited experience of the environment, can become some of the strongest voices for its protection. Our programme of surfing, outdoor education and food growing projects - is designed to help overcome the disconnect between young people and the environment.

What are the problems with plastic pollution?

Slide 8 - Woordweb

  • Half of the plastic we use is used just once and then throw away.
  • Less than a fifth of all plastic is recycled globally.
  • Most ends up in landfills, dumps, or in the environment.
  • Since most plastics do not biodegrade, they tend to last a really long time, breaking down into microplastics.
Plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. On land, animals may become tangled in plastic, or may mistake it for food.
As plastic begins to break down, it can release harmful chemicals.
Plastic on the land may eventually find its way into the sea.
Did you know that a truck load of plastics enters the ocean, every minute of every day? That’s approximately eight million pieces of plastic pollution!
How can we reduce our plastic waste?
A
Say no to plastic straws
B
Use a reusable water bottle.
C
Avoid plastic carrier bags.
D
Snack on fruit, instead of crisps or sweets

Slide 9 - Quizvraag

We don't want to lecture our young participants, so we'll be encouraging them to work in groups to come up with their own solutions to a problem that now affects communities almost everywhere.
Each group will then give a presentation of their ideas which the GET OUT team will assess based on effort. Those who have put in the effort will move on to the second part of the programme...
How can we reduce our plastic waste?
Work in groups to come up with one solution to the problem of plastic pollution. Be prepared to share your idea!

Surfing - the outdoor adventure
This is where the magic happens!
Both day surf trips and residential surf camps are where we teach young people about ocean safety, how to surf and where we follow up on the environmental issues discussed during the indoor programme.
You do not need to bring anything with you for this part of the programme other than the clothes you would normally wear. All equipment is provided throughout the adventuring.
