Early Rome was a monarchy = ruled by a king.
- Made decisions about life and death of people.
- Led the army.
- Had absolute power.
The King was advised by the Senate
Senate = Group of old and wise man.

Rome was a kingdom from 753 - 509 B.C
Tarquinius Superbus (Tarquin the Proud) = Last king of Rome

Expelled by the Senate after ruling like a tyrant and having no respect for Roman tradition.
After this Rome became a Republic.

Republic = Form of government without a king or emperor

The people                   -            Vote and go to meetings




Consul = Ruler and head of the Senate in the Republic.

Rome quickly grew.


  • Negatives:  
  • There was not enough farmland for everyone to live on.
  • Because of that there was no food.
  • People became hungry and discontented.

  • Positives: 
  • Rome had enough men to fight other cities.
  • So Rome was strong enough to expand.
  • Conquered lands made Rome rich and powerful.
