Ionian Revolt

• 499 BC
• Ionian cities revolted against the Persian Empire.
• They were helped by Athens and Thebes.
• The Persians ended the revolt. 

1st Persian invasion

• 492 BC
• Persian army send by Darius to destroy Athens.
• Battle at Marathon (42 km from Athens).
• Persians retreat back to Persia.

2nd Persian Invasion

• 480-479 BC
• Xerxes (son of Darius) invades with a massive army and fleet (c. 300.000)
• Sparta and Athens work together and win after a few impressing victories.

Athens starts looking for allies

and starts the Delian League
