What is a Suffix?

A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

Examples:

-ness → state or quality
happy → happiness

-er / -or → person who does something
teach → teacher

-ful → full of
help → helpful

What does the suffix 'ing' Do?

'ing' is a suffix we add to verbs (action words eg jump) to show something is happening now, like 'jumping' or 'reading'.

Rules for Adding 'ing'

If a verb ends with 'e', drop the 'e' before adding 'ing': make → making, dance → dancing

Drop the 'e'

With most verbs, just add 'ing': play → playing, sing → singing

More Rules for 'ing'

If a word ends with one vowel and one consonant, double the consonant: run → running, swim → swimming

Don't Double for Two Vowels

Double the Last Letter

If there are two vowels before the end, don't double: rain → raining, read → reading
