examiner's comments
Crit.A Language - 11/12
Command of the language is very effective: production is fluent, easy and confident. The range of vocabulary is very sound MID, with some touches of sophistication (e.g. the use of “potential” 3’30”). There is also authentic colloquial phrasing, although the over-use of ‘like’ suggests a ‘native inarticulate’ element. The range of grammar used is quite varied; and is generally accurate, with occasional slips in complex structures such as the 2nd Conditional. Pronunciation is very clear throughout, and intonation is authentic and quite expressive.

Crit.B1 (presentation) - 6/6

The presentation appears well organized, as suggested by the plan introduced from 0’20”. There is a clear initial summary followed by a statement of the overall message, and leading to “two perspectives” (0’32”-0’46”). Interpretations and arguments are explained clearly and efficiently; and personal experience is introduced, from 2’30” onwards. There is sensible use of references and direct quotations. There is a conclusion: “To sum up…”, from 3’06” on.

examiner's comments
Crit.B2 (ideas) - 5/6
The student appears a little floored by the first question, but after fumbling for ideas, her answer is finally quite agile and full. She deals competently with a range of questions, including the whole context of the novel (e.g. the development of Mae’s character), and shows that she can handle sensibly both arguments and evaluations. Throughout the interview, she demonstrates that she can contribute lively anecdotes – although such anecdotes do not necessarily contain much depth (e.g. in response to the question on CAS, 12’45” onwards).

examiner's comments
Crit.C (interaction) - 6/6
Comprehension and interaction is consistently sustained, essentially – the student follows the thread of the conversation very well, and is clearly engaged. She takes honest and open positions, with a degree of critical thinking (for instance her comments that people show “the best picture” of themselves on social media, 8’53” on). She comes across as intelligently thoughtful (if not always entirely focused), and clearly provides “independent contributions”.

Now do the IO in pairs
  • Start with the presentation of the extract (keep an eye on the time: 3-4 minutes). Take notes so you can respond to / comment on: things being said in the presentation.
  • Remember part 2 (4-5 minutes) is about the extract and part 3 (5-6 minutes) about (other) IB-themes.
  • After the IO, comment on language / presentation+ideas and interaction (see IO-criteria)

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Unfortunately we only have time for one IO today, so tomorrow we will listen to / comment on the other one.
